Sharing reserve honours were two Belgian colleagues among Europe’s most successful reiners, namely Ann Fonck on Gunners Specialolena, daughter of NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire Gunners Special Nite out of Dolly Special Lena and owned by Diego Dalla Gassa, and Cira Baeck on Maria Cecilia Fiorucci’s power-packed, eye-catching stallion Phantom Face, previously ridden by Craig Schmersal who earned $113,089 competing in the US with this 6-year-old son of Pale Face Dunnit out of Gorgeous Like A Star, before coming to Italy. Fonck’s mount, “Dolly”, was a relative “young’un”’ in last night’s event: last year the 5-year-old mare took Laura Della Gassa to the top of Levels 4 and 3 of the 4-year-old Non Pro Italian Futurity.

Freestyle Champion
Saturday night at Fieracavalli, Verona, the pavilions were emptying as the public started for home, but in the stands surrounding the Elementa Masters Premiere show pen, as the coloured lights swept the arena in the run-up to the $ 50,000 Freestyle, no-one was budging. In fact, the area had to be closed off to limit the crowd pressing to enter the pavillion. Undoubtedly, Freestyle has a special appeal for both reining fans and the non-specialist public with its exciting and entertaining mix of technique and spectacle, music and manoeuvres. While the technical prowess may have varied between the runs, one element that all contained was an imaginative choreography and an attention to detail in the choice of music and costumes that ensured that every pair was fun to watch.
At the end of the day it was Cira Baeck, a sparkling and powerful Wonder Woman on the glittering stallion Phantom Face, 6-year-old son of Pale Face Dunnit out of Gorgeous Like A Star now owned by Cecilia Fiorucci, that convinced both judges and public alike with a run awarded a whopping 231 that further underlined the fact that Freestyle is a true reining competition: while the artistic element does count, on the judges’ scoring card technique remains paramount. The crowd responded with a roar as Baeck circled and spun, shield in hand, crowned with a tiara and donning the instantly recognisable red bodice and blue pants of the superhero. “The idea was conceived by my boss, Cecilia,” states Cira, “and we chose Wonder Woman as this sport is undoubtedly male-dominated, so we wanted to make a powerful statement for women. It was not actually my first Freestyle, I competed in one a couple of years ago in Poland, dressed as a Ketchup bottle! Both times it has been fun, but I especially enjoyed the run last night because this is the first event in which I have showed this horse at the Open earlier and later in the Freestyle, and he was really there for me.” – NRHA

We were starstruck at PaintWorld today!
Cade McCutcheon, co-champ of The Last Cowboy, rode Taylor Sheridan's Pale Black Gun in the 4/5/6/7-Year-Old Reining Challenge. Taylor is the mastermind behind The Last Cowboy and Yellowstone.
The duo ended up Level 2 & 3 reserve champions and were 3rd in the Level 4. Pale Black Gun is a 2013 bay overo stallion by Pale Face Dunnit x Blazing In Black (QH).

A DREAM COME TRUE
The Run For A Million (TRFAM) Million Dollar Invitational was billed as the biggest event in the history of reining. The Las Vegas event, held Aug. 17, didn’t disappoint.
Twelve of the most successful trainers in the sport competed for a $1 million payout aboard a roster of some of the best reining horses to step into a pen in recent years. In the end, the judges could not separate the 229.5-point performances by Cade McCutcheon and Custom Made Gun, and Craig Schmersal and No Smoking Required.
The riders, each mounted on a son of the late Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner), opted not to run off. They settled for a co-championship, pocketing $307,000 each.
The co-champions were among the eight riders featured in the reality series “The Last Cowboy,” which followed trainers as they prepared their horses for the Million Dollar Invitational. The series finale, which included the results of the Invitational, aired Wednesday, Aug. 28, on the Paramount Network.
Schmersal considered himself fortunate to ride in front of the energetic, packed crowd that traveled to the South Point Equestrian Center to see the dozen riders go for the big prize.
“Not very many people get to do that, and those 12 riders were very fortunate to be able to do that,” Schmersal said. “And, to have my horse fire like he did tonight, it’s a dream come true and a really big deal.”

It’s a moment most people only get to dream of, and on Friday night a 16-year-old girl rode into the arena of the Jim Norick Coliseum, capturing the crowd’s attention from her very first stop.
Through flawless spins and expertly guided circles, building to a crescendo with the final stop, it was clear the run was special. When Jennifer Neudorf’s score – a 226.5 – was announced, the crowd voiced their approval.
Not only had she taken the lead in the Non Pro Level 4 finals, but Neudorf and her horse, Shining In Town, were competing in every division they were eligible for, from the Level 4 down to the Level 1, and the Youth. Their score held through 12 more runs, making Neudorf and Shining In Town the newest, and one of the youngest, NRHA Non Pro Derby Champions!
All totaled, Neudorf won $42,637, almost double her current lifetime earnings. She also won a year’s use of a gooseneck trailer courtesy of CINCH trailers, as well as saddles from Bob’s Custom Saddles, custom Montana Silversmiths’ buckles, Anderson Bean boots, product from Classic Equine, Platinum Performance, Bluebonnet Feeds, and gift cards to SmartPak and Shortys Caboy Hattery.
“I’m speechless. I’m over the moon excited. I still don’t know what I’m feeling. I was super happy for sure, but I just don’t know what to say,” Neudorf said.
Waiting for the final results was difficult. “It was really hard waiting because there were a lot of good horses and riders who went after me. I went over to the Adequan Arena to watch a friend of mine show. We watched the live feed, but I tried to not think about it too much,” she said.
Earlier in the year, Neudorf and Shining In Town, by Hollywoodstinseltown out of Shine Ann, won the Non Pro Level 1 at the National Reining Breeders Classic. “Well, at the NRBC we had a little trouble with our run in and stop, so here I just trusted him more. I just said whoa and it felt so cool,” she explained. “I thought, ‘Are we done sliding?’ and then I realized we still were. We kind of struggle with our backup usually, so I was a little worried about that, but it was good.”
While she thinks she ran to the stops a little fast, it still worked out. “I thank my trainer Craig Schmersal and his whole crew because they’re so supportive, and I wouldn’t be here without them. I also wouldn’t be here without my mom and dad. They’re big supporters. I also thank my friends, too, who make it so fun to come here.”
Neudorf only began showing Shining In Town in January. “Craig tried him out, and I wasn’t there because I was at home in Canada. I just trusted Craig that it would work out and it did,” she said.
Shining In Town’s nominator Sather Family Partnership will also receive a check for $2,176. – NRHA

When the first round of the Open division of the National Reining Breeders Classic concluded on Thursday afternoon, Craig Schmersal had maintained his lead with a 226.5 on No Smoking Required (Colonels Smoking Gun x Icing Required). That win earned $13,839 for owner Wranglen Partnership, and the special oversized check was presented during the Tamarack Ranch Open Draw Party Thursday night.

Face of a Millionaire
Pale Face Dunnit joins the ranks of the NRHA Million Dollar Sire club.

When you know you want something you can’t live without, you can’t stop thinking about it. That’s how Ginger Schmersal felt about the newest NRHA Million Dollar Sire, Pale Face Dunnit. When the time came for the 2007 AQHA/APHA palomino/dunalino stallion to be sold by then-owner Shari Kay Jaster, Ginger knew she had to jump on the opportunity. “I’d watched him since he was a 3-year-old,” she recalls. “I wanted him then, and I let his trainer, Randy Paul, know. I asked about the horse every time I saw him. At the 2011 NRBC, Randy told me he was for sale. I told Randy, ‘Consider him sold.’”
The stallion is now owned by Schmersal Reining Horses and Silver Spurs Equine of Scottsdale, Arizona, where he stands at stud. “Gold Digger” has ties running deep in Arizona. He was bred by NRHA Million Dollar Owner Rancho Oso Rio, LLC, also located
in Scottsdale. He’s by NRHA Ten Million Dollar Sire Gunner and out of Lena Dun It ($48,600+ NRHA LTE) by NRHA Six Million Dollar Sire Hollywood Dun It.
From the Show Pen to the Breeding Barn
At the start of his career, Pale Face Dunnit and Randy Paul won the Rocky Mountain Summer Slide Level (L)4 Open Futurity Championship, tied for third in the Scottsdale L4 Open Futurity, and placed in the top ten at the NRHA L4 Open Futurity. After Craig and Ginger (Hickory Creek Ranch, LLC) purchased Gold Digger in 2011, he went on to be a two-time NRHA L4 Open Derby finalist, National Reining Breeders Classic L4 Open finalist, High Roller Reining Classic L4 Open Derby Reserve Champion (229 score), top ten finisher at the AQHA World Championship Show in junior reining, and United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) National Open Reserve Champion. In all, Pale Face Dunnit earned more than $70,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings.
Even while he was competing in the show pen, he was beginning his career as a sire. “I immediately wanted to collect him after we brought him home from the NRBC,” Ginger recalls. “We had six or seven open mares, but Craig didn’t want to breed him yet. A week
later, Craig asked me how many mares I had open and to breed him to all of them. His first foal crop is only six or seven foals.” With a small first foal crop, you wouldn’t think Pale Face Dunnit would’ve been on the fast track to Million Dollar Sire status. But you’d be wrong.
“The fact that he became a Million Dollar Sire with only four foal crops is remarkable,” notes Mike Miola of Silver Spurs Equine. “We’ve owned him in a partnership for three years now and stand him. He’s a marvelous horse. Everyone who comes to visit our stallions wants to see him.”
After siring last year’s Level 4 Open Futurity Champion, Face The Attitude, shown by NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider Craig Schmersal, Pale Face Dunnit bred 258 mares. Miola notes that his popularity isn’t wavering. “He’s my all-time favorite stud,” Ginger shares. “He’s extremely personable and kind. He’s very special as far as his mind—he’s almost humanlike. He has something I’ve never seen in another horse, and he passes his best traits onto his babies.” – NRHA
