Our Facility

Craig and Ginger Schmersal’s training facility in Overbrook, Oklahoma, is widely recognized in the reining industry as a top-tier operation tailored entirely to the elite performance and care of reining horses.
The facility serves as the headquarters for Schmersal Reining Horses and focuses heavily on training, showing, and managing high-caliber Futurity and Derby prospects, alongside housing prominent reining prospects and brood mares.
Located in southern Oklahoma's Love County, the Overbrook facility sits in the absolute epicenter of the performance horse world. For an elite reining operation like Schmersal Reining Horses, the geographic positioning is highly strategic, offering an unparalleled logistical advantage for competing at the major National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and major premier events.

The Location: The "I-35 Horse Corridor"
Overbrook is situated right off Interstate 35, just south of Ardmore and north of the Texas border. This specific stretch of North Texas and Southern Oklahoma is colloquially known as the heart of "reining country." It is home to the industry's highest concentration of top trainers, premier breeding operations, and specialized equine veterinary clinics. The sandy loam soil native to the region is also idealized for building the perfect deep, stable footing required for reining horses to slide and turn safely.
Proximity to Major NRHA and Premier Events
Operating out of Overbrook places the Schmersal’s just a short trailer ride away from the sport's most prestigious and high-stakes competitions, significantly reducing travel stress on elite futurity and derby prospects:
-
SWRHA Futurity & Horse Show (Ardmore, OK): ~15 Minutes The Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity is held at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in neighboring Ardmore. As one of the most critical pre-futurity stepping stones for three-year-olds before the world championships, having this event practically in their backyard is an immense advantage. In fact, Craig crossed the threshold to become an NRHA Million Dollar Rider at this very venue right around the time they transitioned to the Overbrook facility.
-
The NRHA Futurity & NRHA Derby (Oklahoma City, OK): ~1.5 Hours The State Fair Park (Jim Norick Arena) in Oklahoma City hosts the two pillars of the triple crown: the NRHA Derby in June and the NRHA Futurity in late November. Being just an hour and a half straight up I-35 allows the team to ship horses easily, minimize long-haul fatigue, and even commute back and forth to manage the home ranch if necessary during these grueling multi-week events.
-
The 100x and Tulsa Reining: ~2.5 Hours Another massive major event on the calendar, held at the Expo Square in Tulsa, is just a straightforward drive northeast. It serves as another crucial proving ground for the Schmersal team's young horses and non-pro clients.
-
Major Texas Events (Fort Worth/Arlington Area): ~1.5 to 2 Hours Heading straight south down I-35 takes the team into the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. This grants rapid access to the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth (a frequent host for premier stock horse and cutting events that cross over with the reining industry) as well as global showcase stages like The Run For A Million Qualifer, where Schmersal-trained horses regularly compete.
By grounding their state-of-the-art facility in Overbrook, the Schmersal’s built an anchor that keeps them entirely centralized to the sport’s highest payouts, most rigorous judging stages, and premier showcase arenas.
